Ever since I was a kid, I’ve always wanted to make people laugh. I’m not sure why, but I think it’s because I was the youngest in my house and being funny was my way of getting attention.

But this post isn’t about that. Rather, it’s about how I now force myself to find the funny in every bad situation to help me deal with it.

A couple of years ago, life decided to humble me. I was getting too comfortable so the universe decided to rotate me upside down and kick me a few times. I couldn’t deal with this at first. I stressed out, got anxious and depressed. I just wanted to be left alone. And since I grew up during a time when toxic masculinity was cool, I didn’t want to talk about my problems with anyone. I just kept to myself and let the dark thoughts roam in my head. And when I was with people, I would put on a smile and fake my feelings.

I also didn’t want to tell my friends and family about what I was going through because I was afraid I would be judged or they would just tell me to “man up.”

But after feeling miserable for a few months, I just couldn’t take it anymore. I wanted it to stop. So, I started to watch motivational videos and this really helped. It got me to get out of my bed and actually do something. But then I would still be getting anxiety when something went wrong or when I felt worried.

So this one time, I don’t remember exactly what or where it was, but I was starting to feel anxious. But I wanted it to stop, so I started to think of the funniest thing about whatever I was doing so that my mind wouldn’t have negative thoughts. It worked, so from that day on, I have been using this tactic to calm my mind.

This one time I was at the dentist and she had to put film (I think that’s what it’s called) in my mouth so that she can take an X-Ray of my teeth. And if you have ever felt it, it is painful. The corners of the film stab into your mouth and the size of it chokes you. So to calm myself down so that I can breathe, I started to think of dirty jokes. And this worked!

So throughout the whole session, I would think of random jokes about what the dentist was doing to keep myself in a positive mindset.

And I do this with everything. If I feel like I’m about to be down or I am down, I just think of the funniest thing that could happen at any moment at that moment and this simple activity has really helped me be more positive.

Laughter is such an important part in maintaining a healthy mind. So if you ever feel like there are too many negative thoughts in your head, try finding something funny to boost your mood. You can either do what I do, or you can just watch or listen to something funny. I know it will work for many of you because it works for me. And I’m a person just like all of you. So give it a try.
